Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Abu Dhabi, UAE

Now to share one of my favorites places in Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.

This mosque was a vision by the Late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al-Nahyan who set the foundation of the structure but was completed and opened for worship in 2007, after his death.

When I went back in 2010, I had a basic point and shoot camera. While going through my pictures, 6 years later, I feel that they do not do justice to the beauty of this mosque (well…I don’t think any picture can really do justice to it). However, I hope that you will still enjoy looking through them.

It features several different styles of Islamic architecture like Mamluk, Ottoman and Fatimid.

There are four minarets and eighty two domes and it can accommodate up to 40,000 worshipers.

Most of the mosque is made in the iconic white (favorite color of the sheikh who founded it) marble. It features ornate floral marble carvings that are present throughout the columns and some interior walls.

The courtyard, also featuring huge floral patterns on the floor was probably one of my favorite parts.

I kind of went overboard with the column pictures.

Check out this ornate chandelier in the main prayer hall.

And as usual, we could not leave without looking at the bathrooms. This next picture is the entrance of the bathrooms!

We were lucky that we got there around sunset so we got to see how the structure changes from day to night.

The blue light against the white marble makes everything look so magical at night. I did not want to leave!

What’s a magical place that you’ve been to or would like to go to?

  2. I’m so far behind on reading blogs and just now saw this… WOW! What an amazingly lovely place! I’m a little speechless at the photos, so I can’t even imagine being there in person!

  3. Magnificent splendour! I wonder if it has ever accommodated the 40,000 worshipers at one time or is it a monument to it’s founder? Regardless though it is amazing to behold and you are lucky to have seen it’s true magnificence.

    • I’m not sure if it has ever actually accommodated the 40,000 worshipers, but it is a possibility perhaps in the month of fasting or on any other religious holidays.

      Glad you enjoyed the post!
