As you may know, I live in Chicago but often go to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and Silver Spring, Maryland since my siblings live there. A lot of the times I end up driving to and from there no matter how much I say that next time I’m just going to fly!
I usually don’t mind driving, but this drive is really boring, there’s barely anything exciting that comes along the way! However, I have managed to find a town that I like stopping in when I have time. It’s also conveniently about halfway between Chicago and Harrisburg, called Vermilion, Ohio.
It’s a cute town located by Lake Erie which means there is a beach (one of my favorite things ever). The reason why I initially chose to stop here was because of an ice cream shop called Granny Joe’s Ice Creamatorium. It had good reviews and so I knew I had to check it out!
Unfortunately, I cannot for the life of me remember the flavor of ice cream I had and I keep trying to look it up on their website but I can’t find it. However, I do remember that it had chocolate covered almonds in it and it was creamy and salty and amazing! (So sea salt was also involved.) I usually like to get the ice cream and then walk around the town. There’s that beach and a yacht club that is fun to walk around in as well as the boutique shops around town.
The two out of the three times I was there, it was fairly cloudy and so we couldn’t linger around for too long because it started pouring. But it did make for some cool pictures!I was also jealous of all the houses there. I would love to live by the lake and own a boat! (God willing, one day!)
(I’m always afraid of taking pictures of people’s houses because I don’t want anyone to think I’m invading their privacy or being a creeper. If i do that, it usually means that I just love your house and want to share it’s beauty with the world!) 🙂
The last time I went, a friend of mine came with me, and we found some great photo ops. I totally forced her to be in all these photos, but can you blame me? lol
And just look at these sunflowers!! All in all, I think that if anyone is ever driving through this route, Vermilion is a nice little town to stop by in. One could easily spend a couple of hours there. If I had more time to spare on my trips, I could probably sit on that porch at Granny Joe’s and people watch for hours!
Do you like small towns like this? Have you ever been to a similar place, if so, where?

That ice cream looks dope. These kinds of tiny towns are the essence of roadtrips! Once, from Indianapolis to Kansas City we pulled into a town because they boasted the world’s largest windchime and world’s larges rocking chair… I mean, the world’s largest, right? How can you NOT stop??
Yes, you cannot in any way pass up the world’s largest anything!
You’re right, the houses are absolutely adorable! I love little towns like that as they have a certain charm you can’t find in big cities… Especially when they’re by the water – that’s an extra bonus!! Thanks for introducing that place 🙂
You’re welcome, glad you enjoyed!
haha I love it so much that you only stopped there to look at an ice cream shop. I would so do the same! 😀 and the little town looks so charming and relaxing that I guess it is a very nice plus to the delicious ice cream, right? 😉
Yea, my love for ice cream has randomly increased over the last few years. It’s always a good time to stop for ice cream! 🙂
