I was going through my old photos and making room for new ones when I came across some that I took of Angel’s Gate Park. I couldn’t believe I hadn’t shared these with you earlier because I went here on the same day as Sunken City, a year ago. And just like Sunken City, this park overlooks the Pacific Ocean, giving us the most incredible views ever.
Besides appreciating the perfect ocean views, there’s a few other things you can do here, like fly a kite, have a picnic on the grass, or admire the Korean Friendship Bell (which I most definitely did).
This bell was given to the United States in 1976 by the Republic of Korea to celebrate the bicentennial of the US and as a symbol of friendship between the two nations. 
The bell itself weighs 17 tons and was cast in Korea. It’s housed in a pavilion which was constructed by craftsmen who also came from Korea. The 12 columns of the pavilion represent the Oriental zodiac signs. 
It’s struck five times a year: New Year’s, Korean American Day, 4th of July, Korean Liberation Day and Constitution Day. It’s rung by striking it with a large wooden log.
The pavilion is designed in traditional Korean architecture style with a blue tiled roof. The painting on the roof and columns was done in a style called dancheong which refers to a unique coloring pattern on wooden buildings and artifacts. Such beautiful and vibrant colors!

When I was looking up Sunken City, and saw that this was right next to it, I figured I’d stop by and see what it was about. I thought it was pretty random but really cool at the same time. I couldn’t believe I didn’t know these places existed in my 10 years of living in California! 
What a perfect location for this symbol of peace and friendship that we need a constant reminder of, especially in these times of hate.
